LISBON – For the second time in less than a month, Lisbon is the beneficiary of a gift of money, this time from Earth Tech, the firm that operates the sewer treatment plant.
A representative of Earth Tech presented selectmen with a $2,500 donation Monday night, which was accepted. The Lisbon Trails Commission will receive $1,500, which has been designated to go toward matching funds for a grant the group is seeking, and the remaining $1,000 will be used to purchase stereo equipment for the Teen Center.
Earlier in the month, the Recreation Department received $11,000 from an anonymous donor, a longtime Lisbon resident. The money was for scholarships for children from families who cannot afford to pay fees for participation in programs.
Selectmen decided against calling a special town meeting on a rezoning request for a section of Route 9 presented by Walter Morse, saying they preferred to put it on the May town meeting warrant. The issue was initially referred to the Planning Board by selectmen, but was tabled by that panel to its Jan. 27 meeting. It was decided to wait for input from the Comprehensive Plan Committee.
In other business, selectmen confirmed the reappointment of Mike Robitaille as deputy chief of the Lisbon Falls Fire Co. for two years; Courtenay Fenn was named to the Charter Commission; and Town Clerk Twila Lycette was named registrar of voters for another two-year term. Also, special entertainment permits were granted to Coombs-Mountfort American Legion Post 158 and the Slovak Catholic Association.
Town Manager Curtis Lunt was instructed to investigate complaints regarding the MTM Community Center. The town facility is used by several nonprofit community groups.
