NORWAY – A 12-year-old boy was injured after falling in the woods and slipping into a tree on Wednesday, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Jake Cumberledge of Norway was listed in stable condition Wednesday night at Stephens Memorial Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.

He slid about 50 yards in the snow before striking a tree in the woods off Hedgehog Way in the Crockett Ridge area, Warden Chris Cloutier said.

“The kids went out to go sledding and started hiking up the hill,” Cloutier said, referring to Hedgehog Hill. The youth “made it about 50 yards up the hill and slipped and hit a tree.”

The accident occurred about 2 p.m., Cloutier said.

Hedgehog Way and Hedgehog Hill may be reached from Jackson Lane, a fire lane near the northern end of Crockett Ridge Road. On Wednesday, the Norway Highway Department was called in to sand Jackson Lane so rescue vehicles could better reach Hedgehog Way.

Cumberledge was carried from the woods in a sled towed by an all-terrain vehicle. He was loaded into a PACE ambulance parked at the entrance to Hedgehog Way. Cloutier said he was taken to the hospital.

Cloutier said he thought Cumberledge may have suffered some broken bones.

Five game wardens, the Norway Police Department and the Norway Fire Department were among those who responded to the scene.

Norway Patrolman Duffy Ellsworth said the Maine Warden Service was handling the incident because it was in the woods.

Cloutier was unsure of Cumberledge’s address.
