BOSTON (AP) – Salem’s St. Thomas the Apostle church will remain open while Archbishop Sean O’Malley reviews his decision to close the parish.
O’Malley said in a statement Thursday that he has withdrawn the Jan. 9 closing date for St. Thomas the Apostle, which was among 83 parishes slated to be closed or consolidated under the reorganization plan announced last spring.
No new closing date has been set.
The statement said O’Malley had recently become aware of new demographic information about the neighborhoods the parish serves in Salem and Peabody. The archdiocese’s communications office did not immediately return calls seeking details.
“In keeping with my commitment to study the impact of new information on previously announced parish closing decisions, I have modified the reconfiguration plans for St. Thomas the Apostle Parish,” O’Malley said.
