wWOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) – A 24-year-old Providence man shot his former girlfriend and another man early Thursday then killed himself, police said.

Laurie Lavoie, 21, was shot in the chest after an argument in a Robinson Street apartment at about 7 a.m. She underwent surgery Thursday morning at Rhode Island Hospital and was in critical condition. Police say a man who was not involved in the argument suffered a superficial gunshot wound.

The shooter, Byron Barber, was later found dead in the road about a half-mile away on Elm Street of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. A gun recovered at the scene is being tested to determine its origin.
