PARIS – Plans are coming together for a June 11 bicentennial celebration for Oxford County.
To date, the only glitch may be finding a horseback rider willing to carry a copy of the county charter through the busy suburbs of Boston.
Larry Glatz, a member of the 2005 Oxford County Bicentennial Committee, told county commissioners on Tuesday that the Boston-to-Paris horseback ride is just one part of the celebration. When the horse arrives June 11, a parade will kick off at the Oxford County Courthouse and wind through town streets to the top of Paris Hill.
“It’s going to be great,” commission Chairman Jim Carey said of the celebration.
“It is,” Glatz responded. “As a matter of fact, it’s getting more exciting every minute.”
The horseback ride from Boston is scheduled to begin March 4, Glatz said. A volunteer has offered to walk the suburbs if a rider willing to brave the heavily trafficked roads cannot be found, he added.
Glatz said the June 11 parade will start small but grow larger as it arrives on Paris Hill. Colonial re-enactors will be camped out on Paris Hill as part of the festivities.
“One thing in particular I want to do is establish a procedure for people who want to be in the parade,” Glatz said.
He hopes to draft a sign-up form in order to keep track of parade participants. That way, Glatz said, local police will be prepared for the crowd.
