CONWAY, N.H. (AP) – The Maine woman charged with manslaughter in a weekend shooting death was ordered held on $30,000 bail Monday.
Sara Hersh, 21, of Fryeburg, Maine, was arraigned in Northern Carroll County District Court on charges that she fired the shot that killed Douglas Silvio, 42, of Conway, early Friday morning. Judge James Patten set bail at $5,000 cash or surety, the rest personal recognizance.
District courts do not handle pleas in felony cases.
Someone who called 911 to report the shooting said the woman who fired did not know the gun was loaded, according to the police log.
Silvio and Hersh were at a Christmas party at Crow’s Creations, a tattoo and piercing parlor. The person who called 911 said the victim was dead.
An autopsy showed that Silvio was shot in the chest.
Neighbors at a complex for elderly and disabled residents in North Conway expressed shock.
“He was very nice and would help anybody,” said Doris Hodge. She said Silvio’s former wife and daughter live in the area.
Dottie Field, who said she had known Silvio about 10 years, said he had recently had surgery and walked with a cane.
Other neighbors said he was friendly but kept to himself.
Philip “Chip” Laverriere Jr. owns Crow’s Creations. In a statement to The Conway Daily Sun, he said he had asked guests who planned to drink to spend the night so they wouldn’t drive.
“I wanted to keep the safety of friends who were over for a Christmas party first,” Laverriere said.
Laverriere said he worked all day and most of Friday night and was awakened by noise and chaos. He said he called authorities, though it was not known whether his call was the only one.
“The unfortunate circumstances have left a good friend dead, devastation to my family, myself as well as my livelihood,” he said.
