SALEM, Ore. – Richard Bates, 62, of Salem, Ore., formerly of Dallas, Oregon and Greene, died Nov. 30 in Oregon.
Born in Orange, Calif., Jan. 25, 1942, the son of George Lincoln and Alice Mae Bates, he moved to Dallas in 1950. He attended Oakdale Community School and graduated from Dallas High School in 1960. He moved to Maine in the 1960s.
“Dick” was a member of the Masons in Maine. He worked for International Paper Company for 32 years in Jay. He was a fireman in Oregon, Alaska and Maine, a stock car race driver and AYS football coach and referee through the 1980s.
Dick had degrees in refrigeration, electrical and instrumentation. He retired to Florida before returning to Oregon and enjoyed being back home.
Dick was an avid camper and traveler. He loved spending time with his family and many friends. He exhibited great compassion toward all he came in contact with.
Survivors include his former wife and long-time friend, Jacqueline Bates; sons, Randy Lee Bates, Rickey Alan Bates, Paul L. Bates, John A. Bates, and David R. Bates; stepdaughter, Jacqueline Jordan; brother, James M. Bates; sister, Laura A. Roberts; grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Leroy and Arthur.
