During this season of goodwill, I would like to address a situation that concerns me and many of my neighbors in Lewiston. Getting to and from work, the grocery store or appointments has become dangerous.

Many property owners do a great job shoveling their sidewalks. Those of us who walk these sidewalks appreciate their responsibility and kindness. Being able to walk safely is so important. Sidewalks that are ice-covered on top of snow create conditions that drivers would never tolerate on the roads. Walkers are often forced to walk in the busy streets due to snowbanks on the sidewalks as well as icy conditions.

In my neighborhood, only half of the sidewalks are shoveled. Those of us who are lucky to be in good health have a difficult time. Our neighbors who are elderly or have physical handicaps have their access severely limited. Not everyone can afford to pay for a cab for each trip throughout the winter.

It is my hope that all property owners, as well as churches and business owners, will think about this important responsibility to their neighbors and contribute to a safe and joyous New Year.
