State troopers are back on the west side of the Androscoggin River this week, looking for speeders along Route 4 in Turner and Livermore.

State Trooper Ricci Cote said troopers and Androscoggin sheriff’s deputies had moved their speeding enforcement detail to the east side of the river along Route 202 in Greene and Leeds and Route 136 in Durham.

“We move over every few weeks or so,” Cote said. A group of two troopers and two deputies handed out 13 summonses and several warnings during daylong speed traps last week.

The stops are part of a statewide effort designed to cut down on speeding. Locally, Cote said he expects the effort to continue for another couple of months.

That means an increased presence daily along those roads and occasional speeding details. Several officers are assigned to one section of road for several hours.

Cote said he expects another speeding detail along Route 4 in Turner in the next couple of weeks.

His favorite part has been driving a stealth car.

“It just blends right in,” Cote said. “People don’t even realize it’s a patrol car. You can park in a lot and just run radar and they never know.”

Cote had one driver on Route 202 pass him going about 20 mph over the speed limit.

“He didn’t even realize I was a patrol car. He had no clue,” Cote said. Cote matched his speed for about a quarter-mile before pulling him over.
