NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) – Two suspected gang members from New Bedford arrested with two loaded handguns and body armor in the trunk of their car have been ordered held without bail pending their trials.

The body armor indicates they were up to no good, District Court Judge Joseph Macey said at a dangerousness hearing on Friday.

“The body armor takes this case right off the charts of dangerousness,” Macey said. “There is no other reason for body armor that any reasonable person can reach than you think you are going to get shot.”

Defense lawyers said they intend to ask for a review of Macey’s order in Superior Court.

Louis Bizarro, 19, and Nicholas Gonzales, 18, both reputed gang members, were arrested by state police on Dec. 23 with the body armor, leather gloves, a .357 magnum revolver and a .38 caliber revolver, with six rounds apiece, in the trunk of their vehicle.

Gonzales was driving while Bizarro and a third youth, George Duarte, 17, were passengers. A dangerousness hearing for Duarte has yet to be held.

Gonzales is charged with two counts of unlawful carrying and possession of a firearm, larceny of property worth more than $250, assault with a dangerous weapon and failure to stop for police.

Bizarro is charged with two counts of unlawful carrying and possession of a firearm.
