GREENE – An elderly Portland man died early on New Year’s Day after he apparently lost control of the truck he was driving and crashed, police said.

Robert E. Greenleaf, 84, died at the scene from injuries he received from the crash, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. Greenleaf was alone in his vehicle, and was the only person involved in the crash, which happened on the Quaker Ridge Road at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Greenleaf was traveling north when his vehicle left the road and struck a large rock. The icy road surface likely contributed to the crash, police said. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors, police said. Greenleaf’s 1993 Toyota pickup was totaled.

A portion of Quaker Ridge Road was closed to traffic for more than two hours while the crash was investigated, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators from the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department were assisted at the scene by the Greene Fire and Rescue and the Maine State Police.

The crash is under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
