PORTLAND – Robert E. Greenleaf, 84, of Washington Avenue, Portland, died unexpectedly, Friday, Dec. 31, in Greene, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
He was born in Gardiner on Nov. 19, 1920, a son of Ellie and Florence Pottle Greenleaf.
A graduate of Gardiner High School, he was a U.S. Army Air Force 1st pilot of a B-25, serving as an instructor during World War II.
He was employed for 36 years as a machinist at United Shoe and Machinery Corp. in Lewiston.
He loved spending time outdoors, enjoyed meeting and talking with people. He never met anyone he didn’t like.
He is survived by his children, Stephen Greenleaf and his wife, Linda, of Leeds, Linda T. Greenleaf of Mineral Bluff, Va., Roberta E. Davis and her husband, Charles, of Waldoboro; his brother, Richard Greenleaf and his wife, Zerilla, of West Gardiner; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Juliette Grenier Greenleaf, on Nov. 11, 2004; and his brother, Victor Greenleaf.
