RANGELEY – Police arrested a man in connection with a fight at a bar on New Year’s Eve. A police officer was assaulted after the scuffle.

A second man was issued a summons on an assault charge, Rangeley Police Chief Philip Weymouth said. Police were called to Sarge’s Sports Pub & Grub at 11:42 p.m. Rangeley police officer Brian Hughes detained Peter Perla, 23, of Leominster, Mass., Weymouth said.

Perla’s mother came up to Perla and said something to him, Weymouth said, and Perla allegedly swung at Hughes and hit him in the head, he said.

Hughes arrested Perla and charged him with assault and disorderly conduct. He was released Jan. 1 after posting $200 cash.

Weymouth said two U.S. Border Patrol agents assisted Hughes at the scene.

A second man, Jesse Duval, 29, of Troy, N.H., received a summons on an assault charge, Weymouth said, but it was unclear Monday how he was connected to the fight.

In a separate incident, Rangeley officers Richard Billian and David Rackliffe responded to a 911 hang-up call from Mingo Loop at 8:32 p.m. Dec. 30. An emergency dispatcher tried calling back the residence but couldn’t make a connection, Weymouth said.

When officers arrived, a woman came out of the residence and told police she had been shoved and hit, the chief said.

Billian arrested Edward Hutchinson, 48, of Rangeley, on a charge of domestic assault, Weymouth said.
