WILTON – Buffie and John Crocker and their child escaped their burning home early Sunday with just enough time to grab their jackets.
The electrical fire started near the Christmas tree in the living room, said Wilton Fire Chief Sonny Dunham.
The Crockers and their 10-year-old child had been sleeping when they were awakened by a smoke alarm and their dog’s barking, Dunham said.
The fire was reported at 2:55 a.m. at the 68 High St. residence, near St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
“All they could grab were their jackets,” Dunham said.
The windows in the living room blew out as the family was escaping, he said.
Dunham said he arrived about two minutes after the fire was reported, and the two-story home and attached-garage-type barn were engulfed in flames.
About 57 firefighters from East Dixfield, Farmington, Jay and Wilton responded to the scene, the chief said.
Eight firefighters from Chesterville were on standby at the Wilton Fire Station.
Wilton firefighter Tom Snell twisted his ankle in the slippery conditions at the fire site, Dunham said. He’ll be on crutches for a while, he added.
The house was insured, Dunham said.
State Fire Investigator Dan Roy Jr. reviewed the fire site Sunday, Dunham said.
The chief called the couple’s insurance company for them Monday and called the American Red Cross to help the couple Sunday.
The family is staying with Buffie Crocker’s mother in Greene, Dunham said.
