NASHUA, N.H. (AP) – A former principal at Nashua High School was scheduled to appear in court Monday along with his wife.

The couple is accused of stealing $102,000 from two young men for whom they were guardians.

Hillsborough County Superior Court Judge Bernard Hampsey will be considering a proposed plea deal in the case.

According to court records, Richard and Elizabeth Burpee plan to plead guilty to theft and pay back $51,000 each to Daniel and David Maffee, who are now in their 20s.

They are charged with taking the money from 1995 through last year.

Burpee resigned as principal in August, citing personal reasons.

Two sisters hope to save farm

ALTON, N.H. (AP) – Two sisters are hoping to save their family’s farm by harvesting an unusual crop – water.

Deanna O’Shaughnessy says she and her sister Fae told their father before he died that they’d try to keep Sunny Slope Farm in the family.

She and her sister want to sell spring water from the farm. But rather than set up a potentially noisy bottling plant, they plan to sell the water to other bottlers in bulk. They also want to place most of the farm under a conservation easement to protect it from development.

The town zoning board has praised the plan saying it makes the best use of the land. The plan still requires approvals from the state and the town planning board.

If approved, the sisters want to name their business Chamberlain Springs after their father and grandfather.

Pres. Reagan day proposed holiday

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A Salem lawmaker is proposing naming a day after Pres. Ronald Reagan and a Henniker lawmaker wants a day to honor a Polish hero of the Revolutionary War, Thaddeus Kosciuszko.

Though neither man was born or lived in the Granite State, these Republican lawmakers say New Hampshire should honor them for what they did for the country.

Neither of the days would be official holidays with schools and offices closing. Like General John Stark Day in April, the days would serve as opportunities for people to learn more about the men for whom they are named.

State Rep. David Bettencourt is proposing Feb. 6 as Ronald Reagan Day. State Rep. David Currier is proposing Feb. 12 as Thaddeus Kosciuszko Day.
