LEWISTON – It’s been 17 days since the Lewiston Maineiacs last played at the Colisee, and they have played just two games in that span.
Still, the Maineiacs snapped their winning streak with a tie against Chicoutimi, and then were decimated on the road in Baie-Comeau, dropping a 9-2 decision to the Drakkar.
The Sagueneens come to town tonight. The teams square off at 7 p.m. at the Colisee.
“Now you turn the page (from the last game),” said Maineiacs coach Clem Jodoin. “Every game is a big game. Don’t tell me this game is bigger than on Friday (against Cape Breton). From here we start counting down the games until the end of the season, and every game is a big game. We’re in the pack with everyone else. You have a bad stretch, you fall to the bottom. You have a good stretch, you climb way up to the top, but you’re still in the pack.”
Lewiston is currently 16-17-7 with 39 points through 40 games. Overall, the Maineiacs are 10th in the playoff standings, but sit just five points out of sixth place, currently held by Rimouski.
Chicoutimi, meanwhile, is riding a nine-game unbeaten streak and has taken a point in each of its last 10 games (8-0-1-1).
Helping Lewiston might be the return of Jaroslav Halak from his stint at the World Junior Championships. Halak is expected to arrive in Portland this morning.
“Halak will be back (this) morning. (Travis) Fullerton is back home, while his father is in the hospital, and he won’t be coming down,” said Jodoin. “We have an assistant trainer driving up to Montreal where he will pick up Marc-Andre Perron and they will be in tonight, and we have D.J. DelBuono in case, of maybe Halak will be ready to play. With the way travel has been, though, he is flying commercial and we’ll be lucky if we get all of his equipment, and him, on time. We couldn’t take any chances.”
Chicoutimi will have question marks, too, with both Marek Zagrapan and Stanislav Lascek also at the World Junior Championships until tomorrow.
“The big question tomorrow will be who is on the ice. I know Lascek and Zagrapan are with the Slovakian team with Halak, and we will see if they play,” said Jodoin. “They make that hockey team a better hockey team. They are still a good team, but different without those two players. For us, who will be in net? We will see that tomorrow, too.”
The Maineiacs will almost be back to full strength after the holiday break. Nick Cowan will return from his injury and is reportedly at or near 100 percent, leaving Mathieu Aubin as the only injured Maineiac out of the lineup.
Notes: Also on Wednesday, the Colisee is expected unveil the second floor of its three-story addition that includes a large, expanded snack bar and tavern area. Crews were busy installing cash registers and putting on the finishing touches Tuesday afternoon. The first floor, housing the Maineiacs’ and Colisee’s offices, is also nearly complete and the two organizations already moved into their offices. Construction is expected to be completed on the third floor conference and banquet space by February.
