Two months since the presidential election; lots of opinions about what really happened.

Most of the 55 million people who did not vote for President Bush, the citizens who are capable of objective reasoning, are acutely aware of what happened. This group refused to respond to or be manipulated by the shrill drumbeat of the perfectly orchestrated cavalcade of characters and staged hype with fear tactics at the top of the list versus honesty.

The primary issue before us is the powerful, systematic assault on our democracy with Bush leading the charge. Lies and deception are the norm about our civil liberties, our environment, health care and Social Security (watch for a multimillion dollar ad campaign about this). Lies brought us to Iraq, and more lies are keeping us there; our soldiers are being killed and injured at an alarming rate. More than 100,000 Iraqi citizens have been killed. Fallujah was flattened, not liberated, and 300,000 citizens displaced. The U.S. spends $4 billion a month in Iraq; the Bush inauguration is costing $40 million, yet regular citizens cannot have access.

What can we do? A Ukrainian-type revolt would be nice. Short of that, get involved. Access varied media. Skip Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. Seek organizations that are leading the fight for democracy and that make it easy to contact government officials and others. Forward information to friends and family. Be relentless. Maybe that other chunk of our society will wake up before it’s too late.
