PORTLAND – PCA Great Performances will present the national tour of the musical “Rent,” a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning show, this month at Merrill Auditorium. There will be three performances: 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, and 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15.

Written and composed by the late Jonathan Larson and directed by Michael Greif, “Rent” celebrates a community of artists as they struggle with the soaring hopes and tough realities of today’s world.

Based on Puccini’s “La Boheme,” “Rent” received the Tony for best musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for drama. It premiered off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1996 and rapidly became a sold-out hit. The show transferred to Broadway soon after and continues to play to standing room only audiences. Last February, “Rent” surpassed “Fiddler on the Roof” to become the 10th longest running show on Broadway.

Larson, the show’s creator, died unexpectedly of an aortic aneurysm in 1996, shortly after the show’s final dress rehearsal off-Broadway and 10 days before his 36th birthday.

Tickets, which are $36, $46 and $53, are available through PortTix, the box office at Merrill Auditorium. For more information, people can call PortTix at (207) 842-0800.
