FARMINGTON – Certified hypnobirthing childbirth educator Marsha Slaughter, a registered nurse, is now offering classes in hypnobirthing at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Hypnobirthing is a philosophy of natural childbirth, in which a mother-to-be and her birthing companion – husband or coach – use hypnosis to create a more comfortable birthing experience.

“Hypnobirthing moms develop the ability to achieve a state of deep relaxation and serenity,” said Slaughter. “In this state the body releases a natural anesthesia, endorphins, which replace the stress hormones that are largely responsible for pain during labor.”

The course consists of five, two- to three-hour weekly classes. Slaughter has been an obstetrical nurse at Franklin Memorial for 17 years. She is certified as a hypnotherapist by the National Guild of Hypnotherapists.
