POLAND – For the second year in a row, Poland Regional High School will encourage hundreds of community members in Poland, Minot, Mechanic Falls and Raymond to read and discuss the same book.
This year’s novel, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” by Mark Haddon, is a comedy/murder mystery narrated by a 15-year-old boy who has a form of autism. The book has won awards and has been praised by literary groups for both adults and teenagers.
Through the project, officials hope to bring generations together for discussions, cultivate lifelong readers and establish the high school as a community center.
During the school’s “4 Towns on the Same Page” project last year, 300 to 400 people read “Speak,” a novel about a traumatized teenage girl. This year, officials hope to get 500 readers.
With help from grants, the high school has bought several hundred copies of the book and will make them available to buy or borrow. Local libraries will also stock copies.
This year’s program will kick off on Jan. 27 with an evening of readings, refreshments and entertainment from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the high school. The reading project will last several months and will end on March 15 with a celebration of reading and a potluck supper at the high school.
For more information about the project or to obtain a copy of the book, call Erika Frank at 998-5400, extension 111.
