BELGRADE (AP) – Three snowmobiles fell through ice in Belgrade and Winthrop Sunday.
No one was injured, but two people were lucky to survive, said Maine Warden’s Service spokesman Mark Latti.
Peter Haag and John Beaupain of Belgrade were snowmobiling on Great Pond when their vehicles broke through ice about an eighth of a mile from shore. They pulled themselves out and tried to walk to shore, but the riders repeatedly fell through again before they made it, wardens said. The ice was up to 8 inches thick in places, but only 1 inch where the riders fell through.
The third snowmobile fell through ice on Cobbossee Lake. No name was available.
