The January term of the Androscoggin county S. J. Court will be open in Auburn next Tuesday. Justice A. R. Savage will preside. The term promises to be of about the usual length, although it is expected that it will be rather shorter than the corresponding term last year. One of the most important cases that will come up for trial is that of Crockett and Breckenbridge who will be tried in connection with the fatal railroad accident, which occurred at the State Fair grounds, Lewiston, last September. One of more important civil cases will also be tried this term.

Should it take 66 years for mail to travel from Wayne to Auburn? Should it? Well, that’s what an Auburn mail carrier, Vincent Capano, would like to know. Capano – member of the well known family – was startled yesterday, pinched himself, cleaned his glasses, and took every measure he could think of when he picked up the collection box at the Perryville Drug Store a postcard bearing the cancellation date of “Wayne, May 2, 1888.” The collector’s item is one of the self-stamped, plain variety; and the one cent stamp in this instance is imprinted right in the middle instead of over in the upper right hand corner as on today’s cards.

Lewiston’s future parking garage captured the spotlight today as U. S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Moon Landrieu and Mayor Paul R. Dionne broke ground at the Canal Street site. Speaking highly of the six-tiered facility to be constructed on property bounded by Canal, Pine and Ash streets, and Canal Street Alley, Landrieu told a crowd of about 200 onlookers that it “represents the beginning of something very good and the restoration of something very good.” Lewiston should be proud, he indicated, because it submitted “one of the first and most successful” applications processed by HUD.
