AMHERST, Mass. – Mark Matheson scored at 10:35 of the third period to give Massachusetts a 2-2 overtime tie with Maine on Friday night.

Kevin Jarman put the Minutemen (10-11-2, 4-6-2 Hockey East) ahead 1-0 at 8:03 of the first period.

Maine (11-8-4, 6-3-2) surged ahead 2-1 with power-play goals by Greg Moore at 15:40 of the first period and Derek Damon at 2:03 of the second.

The Black Bears outshot the Minutemen 30-22 but UMass goalie Gabe Winer made 28 saves.

Colby 5, Williams 2

WATERVILLE – Josh Reber scored a hat trick and added an assist to propel Colby to a 5-2 victory over Williams in men’s hockey action Friday.

Three rookies scored the five goals to give coach Jim Tortorella his 150th career win with the Mules (8-2-1). Defenseman Arthur Fritch tied the game at 1-1 in the first period, and forward T.J. Kelley added the final goal at 14:15 of the third frame.

Goalie Chris Ries stopped 20 shots for Colby, while Brad Shirley made 29 saves for the Ephmen (4-7-1).

USM 4, Amherst 2

GORHAM – Brian Collins netted a pair of goals in the third period to lift Southern Maine to a 4-2 victory over Amherst.

Matt Mendoza set up Collins’ game-winning goal 10:22 into the third. Collins added an unassisted empty-netter with 35 seconds left for insurance. Erik Kent and Chris Sparkes also tallied for the Huskies (7-6-1 overall, 4-4 in the ECAC). Ryan Sullivan turned aside 22 shots to earn the win. A.J. Greco and Steve Nelson scored goals for Amherst (6-4-2, 4-2-2).

Women’s basketball

Colby 59, Tufts 54

WATERVILLE – Regina Wohl scored 16 points, including a big 3-point shot late in the game, to lift Colby to a 59-54 win over Tufts in NESCAC women’s basketball action Friday.

Wohl nailed a 3-point shot with 2:28 left in regulation to break a 48-48 tie and put the White Mules (5-7) up for good. Wendy Bonner, who scored nine points, hit two free throws with 1:51 remaining to put Colby up 53-48.

Tanya Rosbash added 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

The Jumbos (8-3) led 21-20 at halftime. Valerie Krah provided 16 points and five assists, while Laura Jasinski had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Husson 78, Maine Maritime 76

BANGOR – Michelle Murray scored 15 points with five assists and three 3-pointers as Husson upset Maine Maritime Academy 78-76.

Jodi Merchant netted 15 points and Crystal Martin scored 12 for the Braves (7-7).

Alyssa Burns dropped in 29 points with 15 free throws and 12 rebounds, while Michelle Gott scored 18 points for Maine Maritime (10-2).

Men’s basketball

Bates 71, Bowdoin 46

LEWISTON – Brian Gerrity tossed in 24 points to lead Bates College to a 71-46 victory over Bowdoin in a men’s basketball game Friday.

Rob Stockwell added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats (10-5). Bates used a 13-4 run to take a 33-22 halftime lead. Gerrity was 5 of 10 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Andrew Hippert led Bowdoin (7-5) with 12 points.

Tufts 76, Colby 69

MEDFORD, Mass. – Reggie Stovell netted 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Tufts to a 76-69 victory over Colby.

Andrew Jenkins went five for five from beyond the arc and scored 20 points for Colby (9-3). Pat McGowan also added 13 for the White Mules.

Bowdoin 4, Middlebury 2

BRUNSWICK – Junior forward Adam Dann scored the eventual game-winner with 1:22 left in the third period to send Bowdoin to a 4-2 upset victory over top-ranked Middlebury in men’s hockey action Friday.

The first period featured back-and-forth play until Nick Dunn pounced on a power-play rebound for Bowdoin to make it 1-0 at the 16:54 mark. The Polar Bears (9-1-1) doubled their lead just over three minutes into the second period when Dann scored his first of the night.

The Panthers (9-1-1) answered with consecutive goals from Mickey Gilchrist and Darwin Hunt before the close of the second period.

Goalie George Papachristopoulos was outstanding in net for Bowdoin, makin 32 saves.
