Some states are considering changing the school week to four days. That shouldn’t happen because we already have problems with school and family budgets.
Parents who work all week would need to find a day care service for the day students wouldn’t have school. Some parents couldn’t afford the extra day care cost, and if they couldn’t, they wouldn’t want to leave their child unattended.
State law requires 1,098 hours of class time per year, so if the four-day school week were passed, then schools would have to increase the length of the school day. Some families who are home on Fridays enjoy the togetherness.
Another big problem is money. Some schools have a four-day week as a way to trim budgets. Some parents who work at those schools do not earn enough money because of that four-day week.
Some people think Maine and other states don’t have the money to support full weeks, but I believe we should keep the current five-day school week in Maine.
