LEWISTON – Lewiston Adult Education has redesigned its certificate programs to give students a competitive edge in the job market. Students can now earn multiple levels of certificates.

The clerical certificate, required for all certificates, provides the essential tools necessary for work in a general office environment. The medical office and accounting assistant advance certificates offer students the opportunity to enter a specialized area of study.

The clerical certificate is designed to provide the skills necessary to be successful in roles such as secretary, office manager, administrative assistant and customer relations.

The accounting assistant certificate is focused on skills required in jobs such as accounting clerk, bookkeeper, accounts payable/receivable and record keeper.

The medical office assistant certificate is directed at positions such as patient service representative, medical secretary, medical billing specialist and medical records clerk.

The required courses for the clerical certificate are Keyboarding, Computer Literacy, Principles of Accounting I, Office Practice, Business Writing and Effective Workplace Communication.

For the medical office certificate, in addition to the clerical certificate courses, students must take Medical Terminology, Medical Billing, Medical Coding and Medical Office Practice.

The accounting assistant certificate requires Principles of Accounting II, QuickBooks I and II and Excel I and II in addition to the clerical certificate courses. Students must also demonstrate basic proficiency in math and writing skills before being admitted into the program.

The goal of Lewiston Adult Education’s certificate programs is to empower students with some of the most sought-after skills in the Maine job market. Classes begin the week of Jan. 24.
