This is in response to Guy Bourrie’s column of Jan. 6. I drove a truck for over 30 years, and the way some drivers nowadays use the Jake brake is like they don’t have any other brakes.

I live in downtown Jay, where the speed limit is 25 mph, so there is no need for the Jake brake to be on. There are two young truck drivers who think it’s funny to hit the Jake in front of my house because I called their companies and asked them to stop using it so much.

I worked for one company that had all their trucks set so if the truck was going less than 35 mph, the Jake would not work. I think other trucking companies should do the same. There would be less noise at 4 a.m.

My girlfriend is handicapped, and the noise from truckers using Jake brakes wakes her, and then she is up the rest of the night. She needs at least 10 hours of sleep in order for her medications to work.

I am trying to find out how to get a ordinance passed to stop the use of Jake brakes within city limits.

There are a lot of trucks that go by my house, and the drivers never use the Jake brake. Those are the good truck drivers.
