AUGUSTA – The Maine Bureau of Geology and Natural Areas is sponsoring Maine Geology Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, in the Hall of Flags at the State House.
“This will be an excellent opportunity to learn how important Maine’s geology is to its economy and environment,” said Dr. Robert Marvinney, state geologist and bureau director. “The exhibits will cover a broad spectrum of applications from ground water to coastal geology to aggregates.”
Exhibitors will include Dragon Cement, Poland Spring Waters and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s Drinking Water Program. Topics will include geologic mapping, coastal resources and water resources.
Rose Society
BRUNSWICK – The Mid-Maine Rose Society will meet for lunch at noon Sunday, Feb. 6, in the caf at Bookland, Cook’s Corner. A business meeting will be held at 2 p.m. The spring schedule will be discussed to include the rose sale on May 21.
Trustees to meet
CASTINE – The Maine Maritime Academy board of trustees will hold a quarterly meeting at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at 9 a.m., in the Jalbert Room, Leavitt Hall, located on the college campus. William E. Haggett of Bath chairs the 13-member board.
Scholarships
AUGUSTA – The American Lung Association of Maine recognizes its Golf Privilege Card courses and driving ranges by awarding three scholarships to graduating seniors in Maine each year.
The scholarships will be awarded based on academic achievement, financial need, references and a completed application. Students who qualify must have some involvement with the game of golf, either as a player or as an employee.
The student must also plan to pursue higher education in a medical or health-related field. The three $500 scholarships will be awarded to one student from eastern Maine, one from western Maine and one from any Maine high school.

Cancer challenge
WESTBROOK – The 11th annual Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge, coordinated by Maine’s credit unions, will happen on Sunday, Feb. 13, at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
The tournament is a three-on-three, co-ed, double-elimination event and is open to adults 21 or older. The entry fee is $100 a team and all funds raised go to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
Teams may be of any size and the only stipulation is that a member of the opposite sex is on the court at all times. All participants receive a prize just for playing and plaques and T-shirts will be awarded to the top eight teams. Space is limited to the first 36 teams to register, an increase over last year’s 32-team limit.
