Dear Sun Spots: I enjoy your column very much. I have two questions you might be able to help me with. I have a cloth upholstered chair which has a bad musty smell. Do you know of anything I can use to get rid of the odor? I have tried sprays but they didn’t work. Also, can you please list all of the albums that have been made by Brooks and Dunn? Thank you for any help. – Nancy, Norway.
Answer: In regards to your first question, Sun Spots encourages responses from readers who have successfully removed musty odors from furniture. In addition to these responses, Sun Spots found the following advice from the Web. If it’s appropriate for the fabric on your chair, you can try renting a steam cleaner with upholstery attachments or a hand-held steam cleaner and steam clean the chair using a combination of hot water and Oxi Clean. You may want to steam clean the chair on a sunny day and then allow the chair to dry outside in the fresh air and sunshine. If this fails to work, there is a disinfectant and odor eliminator product called OdoBan that is available at Sam’s Club. It is a multipurpose cleaner, deodorizer and disinfectant, which is safe to use on most washable surfaces when used as directed, and it eliminates odors instantly. If nothing else works, you may have to have the chair reupholstered, which is a less expensive than buying a new chair.
To answer your second question, according to the Brooks and Dunn Web site, the singing duo has released 11 albums since 1991, listed here in chronological order from most recent to the first album: “Greatest Hits II” (2004); “Red Dirt Road” (2003); “It Won’t Be Christmas Without You” (2002); “Steers and Stripes” (2001); “Tightrope” (1999); “If You See Her” (1998); “The Greatest Hits Collection” (1997); “Borderline” (1996); “Waitin’ on Sundown” (1994); “Hard Workin’ Man” (1992); and “Brand New Man” (1991). You can visit their Web site at www.brooks-dunn.com.
Dear Sun Spots: For the persons looking for someone who does chair-caning in the Friday, Dec. 31m Sun Spots column, I also do chair-caning and can be reached at (207) 364-2697. – Grace McKivergan, Rumford.
Dear Sun Spots: All of us at Cote Bros. Sewing Machines would like to thank all those who donated to the Mittens for Kids project. With your help, 530 pairs of mittens and 35 hats were sewn or knitted and donated to the Salvation Army on Dec. 4 in conjunction with WCSH’s Coats for Kids. We’d like to send out a heartfelt thanks to all those who donated fleece and made mittens and hats. Thanks to your hard work and generosity we have enough fleece to start making mittens for 2005. If you or someone you know would like to get started on next year’s mittens, please stop by at our store and pick up fleece and a free pattern. We live in a great community!
On another note, recently in your column you mentioned that we offer a “Kids Sew In.” Not only do we offer classes but we also furnish sewing machines during class, free of charge, to those who do not own one or to those who would like to learn how to sew. The article you published before said that we did not furnish machines. We have always offered this service to our customers. Just wanted to clarify this. – Lisa Cote-Blake, Auburn.
Dear Sun Spots: It’s that time of year when new calendars are hung and old ones discarded. I’m looking for cat calendars to rescue from the recycling bin. I can be reached at (207) 786-0478. I can make arrangements to pick them up in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Thank you. – J.S.P., Auburn.
