LOS ANGELES (AP) – Thirty-two Chinese men were found inside two cargo containers on a ship arriving at the Port of Los Angeles from Hong Kong, authorities said.

The suspected illegal immigrants were discovered Saturday night when a crane operator saw three men climb out of a container on the Panamanian-flagged NYK Athena, said Los Angeles Port Police Lt. Titus Smith.

“This is a very large number,” Smith said. “Most of the times, we get a couple of people here and there, but we haven’t found so many for some time.”

The 28 men and four male teenagers appeared to be in good health and were being held at a federal detention center pending an immigration hearing.

The men had apparently been in the 40-foot containers for 10 days with a supply of food, water, sleeping bags and battery-powered fans.

Authorities do not believe the ship’s crew knew about the stowaways. A container manifest listed the contents as “clothing.”

One man said he paid $3,000 for passage, although smuggling fees from China typically range from $30,000 to $60,000, officials said.
