I was appalled by the actions of Maine Game Warden Jason Luce, as reported in the Sun Journal on Jan. 11.

I would like the Sun Journal to follow up on this incident.

Some questions I had that were not addressed in the article are as follows: Was Mr. Luce wearing a helmet? What kind of training did he have to (un)safely pursue Mr. Atkinson at incautious and imprudent speeds? How many laws and basic civil rights did Mr. Luce violate when he commandeered the snowmobile and proceeded to crash it into Mr. Atkinson? How will the poor men who lost their snowmobiles be reimbursed for damages? Is a Class E crime with a maximum fine of $500 worth the loss of life or limb? If so, what next? Will police be justified to use deadly force on a jaywalker?

I am sick and tired of Maine state game wardens acting seemingly above the law. All police officers are held accountable for their actions and any acts of wrongdoing have always been a matter of public records and reported. Why should the Maine Warden Service be self-regulating and all disciplinary actions be kept in-house? Doesn’t the Maine Warden Service have better things to do than pursue alleged misdemeanor criminals with deadly force? Our precious tax dollars would be better spent re-educating our game wardens how to do their jobs within the constraints of the United States Constitution like all other law enforcement officers do.
