PARIS – Oxford County commissioners voted Tuesday to reject a settlement offer in a lawsuit involving a Canton selectman who is employed by the county.

Sgt. Christopher Wainwright on Oct. 7 filed an appeal in Oxford County Superior Court, alleging the commissioners exceeded their authority and violated the Maine Freedom of Access Law in deciding to remove him from the county Budget Committee. He also alleged the commissioners deprived him of a hearing.

Wainwright had been appointed to the committee at an Aug. 31 meeting. But he was told a week later he had been removed because it would be a conflict of interest for him to serve while working as a sergeant with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department.

On Tuesday, the commissioners voted 3-0 to reject a settlement offer from Wainwright after an executive session, said administrative assistant Carole Mahoney.
