RUMFORD – Dr. Dieter Kreckel has been awarded the degree of fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The honor is in recognition of his interest and participation in special educational programs designed to enhance professional competence and the quality of health care provided to the people of America.

Kreckel is the medical director of Swift River Health Care and Elsemore Dixfield Center, where he has practiced since 1993. He is a past president of the Rumford Hospital medical staff.

Before coming to the Rumford and Dixfield practices in 1993, he served in the Air Force, overseas and in Maine, and continues that association as a colonel in the reserves.

A graduate of the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Kreckel completed his residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice.

Kreckel is the Oxford County representative to the Maine Medical Association, chairman of the Central Maine Physicians-Hospitals Organization and is on the board of directors of the River Valley Growth Council. He volunteers as team doctor for several school sports and takes an active role in the annual Christmas in the Valley celebration.

He and his wife, Jennifer, an attorney, live in Rumford with their two children, Deirdre and Brendan.
