LEWISTON – The Franco-American Heritage Center on Cedar Street will present the Don Roy Trio at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, in the performance hall.

Don and Cindy Roy and their bassist, Jay Young, have long entertained audiences in the southern Maine area and beyond. Don is a champion fiddler in many styles of fiddling. With roots deep in the Maritimes and Quebec, the Roys’ musical passion is in the French-Canadian tradition, followed closely by Celtic music. Don has been a member of many successful groups including ones playing bluegrass, Irish and French music, and he directed the popular Maine French Fiddlers for that group’s duration. He received fellowship awards from the state of Maine in 1994 and 2001 for excellence in traditional music.

Cindy Roy, also a member of the former Maine French Fiddlers, is known for her step-dancing piano accompaniment. Augmented by her “rhythmic feet,” she adds life and enthusiasm to the music, according to a spokesman for the center.

Young plays upright bass with the group. He began playing folk music on a 12-string guitar in the 1960s. He slid into playing electric guitar in a blues band influenced by the Chicago blues-style and then in a series of rock ‘n’ roll bands. Young started playing upright bass in the 1970s with a church choir and soon joined a bluegrass band. In this trio, his bass playing ranges from a minimal definition of the chord progression to a jazzy “walking bass” style.

Last year, the trio’s performances included ones at The Kennedy Center and The Library of Congress.

In this concert, the Roys will entertain using a blend of fiddle and piano styles that are common to traditional musicians in Maine.

Advance tickets, $8, may be purchased at Victor News on Park Street. Tickets at the door, $10. FMI: go to www.franco-americanheritage.org; or call 783-1585.
