MEXICO – The Mexico Taxpayers Association is being resurrected.

Byron Ouellette, a member of the association that was active in the 1980s, and several other former members are launching it again to help selectmen find ways to cut costs.

“We’re reassembling ourselves because of the financial crisis,” said Ouellette who attended Wednesday’s selectmen’s meeting.

Selectmen are wrestling with what may be a deficit as high as $300,000.

The final audit is due in mid-February.

Ouellette, a member of the town’s Budget Committee, said the first Mexico Taxpayers Association was active in the 1980s when the town went from a three-person Board of Selectmen to a five-person board.

He believes the town has been living beyond its means for several years.

“Many people are frustrated,” he said.

He said that the association will attend selectmen’s meetings on a regular basis to offer suggestions.

The first meeting of the reorganized group will be held in the next week or so.

Those interested in participating can contact Ouellette at 369-9430 or Marjorie Richard at 364-2562.
