LEWISTON – Investigators on Monday were still looking into a fire that left five people homeless over the weekend.

The fire at 612 Sabattus St. broke out about 6:45 p.m. Saturday. No one was home at the time, but several animals were in the two apartments.

Police were able to rescue two cats, but a dog and two birds perished in the blaze, said Lewiston Police Lt. Michael McGonagle.

Firefighters from Lewiston, Auburn, Sabattus and Lisbon responded to the fire, bringing it under control by 7:10 p.m.

Yellow police tape remained wrapped around the building Monday as police and fire investigators continued their probe.

The tenants have all been placed at local motels, McGonagle said.
