GREENE – Starting Feb. 8, Charles Noonan of Edgartown, Mass., will enter his new office of Green town manager and take on the roles of tax collector and road commissioner, among others.

He was chosen from among 16 applicants.

No stranger to Maine, Noonan obtained his bachelor’s degree at the University of Southern Maine. He has also done graduate study in public policy and management, and holds a legal assistant certificate. He has held town manager positions in Vinalhaven and Jay.

For the last 13 years he has acted as manager for the Martha’s Vineyard Refuse Disposal and Resource Recovery District in Massachusetts.

The board met with Noonan on Monday night and Selectman Timothy Doyle said it was clear Noonan will be a good fit.

“He brings with him many years of managerial experience including town management,” Doyle said. “He also has an interest in the highway department and is familiar with equipment repair.” The board believes he brings a high level of maturity and will be a team player capable of solving the town’s problems.

A contract defining Noonan’s salary and term has yet to be drafted. Doyle said the town budgeted $64,500, but no amount has been set. Noonan will have a six-month probation period before any long-term contracts are negotiated.

“I know he will benefit the town of Greene,” Doyle said. “We are all excited to have him on board.”

During a special town meeting Monday, taxpayers approved spending more than budgeted at town meeting to resolve the equipment problems this winter.

“Of a fleet of four, three of the multipurpose plowing trucks were broken down,” he said. “This spending authority will give us enough money to get through until town meeting in March.”
