LIVERMORE – The staff at Norlands Living History Center is inviting the public to join it on Saturday, Jan. 29, for a day of ice harvesting.

The staff will begin to set up at 8 a.m. and score the ice in preparation for the cutting. Participants are welcome to arrive early, or at 10 a.m. when the cutting will begin. The ice blocks from Bartlett Pond will be hauled to the ice house in the barn, to be used as summer cooling material.

Strong and willing workers are needed to help cut, haul and move ice. Teams of horses or a team of oxen are also needed, as well as the use of another sled to aid the effort. Those who have a team they would be willing to bring are asked to call ahead to the farm manager for more details.

The farmer’s cottage will be open for those who need a place to stay warm. Staff and volunteers will be there preparing a meal that will be served at the 12:30 p.m. midday break. The menu includes chuck-wagon beans and biscuits or cornbread with dessert, all for $5. Coffee and hot chocolate will also be available. Help is also always needed in the kitchen to provide good conversation and serve the refreshments for those working outdoors.

No reservations are necessary. However, for more information, people may call Norlands at 897-4366. In case of inclement weather, the ice harvesting will take place on Feb. 5.
