LEWISTON – Ward 1 has lost its School Committee member.

Kay Theberge resigned her seat in a short letter sent Friday to the School Committee chairman and city clerk. Theberge said she accepted a new job and the hours would not allow her to attend meetings.

“It has been a privilege to serve on the School Committee; however, this is what is best for me and my constituents,” she said in the letter.

Theberge made her resignation effective immediately. She did not attend Monday’s meeting.

She could not be reached for comment Monday night.

Theberge won the School Committee seat in November 2003 after beating local attorney David Vincent, 883 to 503. She began serving on the School Committee in January 2004. At the time, Theberge, a mother of two, was also serving as vice chairwoman of the Lewiston Republican Committee.

Because more than half of Theberge’s two-year term has been completed, the city charter states there can be no special election, Chairman James Handy said during the meeting Monday. Instead, the mayor must nominate a candidate and the City Council must approve a new representative.

No timeline has been established for that yet.
