NEWPORT (AP) – Two patrons of Lucky’s Tavern face assault charges arising from a weekend bar brawl that spilled into a potato field and flared up anew in a hospital with an attack on a police officer.

Officer Michael Cote received 17 stitches in his mouth and face in the aftermath of the fight that began around 1 a.m. Saturday.

Clarence Rider, 23, of Exeter, Maine, was charged with assault on bar owner Paul LaChance and assault on a police officer. Robert Methvin, 42, of Meriden, Conn., was charged with assault on the bar’s bouncer.

About 30 people were in the bar on U.S. 2, but apparently only eight were involved in the fight, Police Sgt. Sanger Davis said. Bouncer Warren Worcester, 50, was injured and tables and chairs were upturned and scattered about.

Davis said Methvin and Rider, who had left the bar, were identified by LaChance as the two who had started the fight.
