RUMFORD – Traffic was snarled for an hour early Tuesday evening after a three-vehicle accident on Lincoln Avenue that involved a SAD 43 school bus with about 10 children aboard.

No injuries were reported, said investigating Patrolman Paul Casey.

The wreck, Casey said, occurred when the school bus exited Waldo Street onto Lincoln Avenue adjacent to Hannaford about 5:50 p.m.

He said the bus, which was driven by Walter Hammond, 61, of Rumford, broadsided a 1994 Jeep headed up the Lincoln Avenue hill.

The Jeep, operated by Daniel Hodge, 55, of Mexico, was knocked into the opposite lane, where it collided with a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck descending Lincoln Avenue between Hancock and Waldo streets, Casey said. The truck was operated by Lawrence Major, 41, of Fort Smith, N.H.

A tractor-trailer truck attempting to turn east from Hancock Street to descend Lincoln Avenue waited for several minutes across that intersection, until it could be turned around.

Police cruisers and a Rumford firetruck were used to block access to the area between Waldo and Hancock streets until a tow truck could remove the Jeep.
