BRUNSWICK – Robert C. Verhoeven, “Bob,” 84, of Durham, formerly of Farmington, died Friday night, Jan. 21, at the Midcoast Senior Health Center in Brunswick.

Born Jan. 28, 1920, in New Canaan, Conn., he was the son of Cornelius A. and Ethel (Rose) Verhoeven. He graduated in 1938 from Long Beach High School, in New York and was a United States Army veteran of WWII. On April 3, 1948, he married Dolores Bayer in Long Beach, N.Y.

For 22 years, he was employed at Western Electric. He then was an office manager and bookkeeper for Davis Brothers Builders in Farmington, and in 1963 opened the Country Squire Gift Shoppe with his wife, Dolores. In the late 70s, they owned and operated the Pioneer House Restaurant, across the street from their home and gift shop on the Farmington Falls Road, routes 2 and 27. During his retirement, they moved to Sanford, N.C., where he chose to continue to work at McDonald Brothers Building Supply.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dolores, of Durham; two sons, Robert M. “Bob” of Carrabassett Valley, and Paul J. and his wife, Donna, of Brunswick; and three grandchildren, Paul James II, Ryan C., and Emily E.

He was predeceased by a sister, Betty McCready.
