WOODSTOCK – Selectmen on Tuesday unanimously approved having a local company improve and maintain the town’s ball fields this year.

The care of the fields will be turned over to J.R. Hayes & Daughter Landscaping of Bryant Pond, according to Town Manager Vern Maxfield. The system was recommended by the town’s recreation committee.

“The project includes upgrading and maintaining the fields at a quoted cost by J.R. Hayes of $2,986,” said Maxfield, “and youth athletics supporter Philip Goot has offered to pay the cost except for a $500 commitment by the town. The only other stipulation is that the landscapers will be allowed to display their sign on the fence so people will be aware of who did the work.”

During a brief discussion on the proposal, Selectman Leon Poland said, “I am for it. I think it will be a great benefit to the town as the ball fields have needed work for a long time.”

Board Chairman Steve Bies said at that time that people need to understand it is for one year only, but Maxfield added that it might eventually be extended beyond the one-year trial.

“I suspect if everyone likes what happens this summer they may continue it,” he said.

Raising the town’s $500 share will come from money raised traditionally each year for the ball fields at the annual town meeting in March.

In other business, work was begun fine-tuning a budget proposal for 2005, which the selectmen hope to have ready to go to the printers after their next meeting Tuesday, Feb. 1.

Residents are welcome to attend.
