AUGUSTA (AP) – A Winthrop man convicted of killing a 21-year-old man in a drunken driving accident 15 years ago is going to prison for four years after pleading guilty to driving drunk.
Runar U. Schlosser was convicted Wednesday in Kennebec County Superior Court on charges of operating under the influence, failure to stop for an officer, refusing to submit to arrest and operating after suspension. Justice S. Kirk Studstrup sentenced him five years in prison, with all but four years suspended, and two years of probation.
“What does it take to get the point home to Mr. Schlosser that he cannot drink and drive?” Studstrup asked.
District Attorney Evert Fowle told the judge that Schlosser also had two 1996 convictions for drunken driving, which occurred while he was on probation with a condition that banned him from drinking.
Schlosser has been in jail on $50,000 bail since his arrest last November in Winthrop.
“I’ve been out of prison four or five years now, and I made a serious mistake,” Schlosser said.
Schlosser won a two-day delay in reporting to prison after telling Studstrup he wanted to explain to his children what happened and to see his ailing father-in-law.
Schlosser was convicted in October 1990 of manslaughter and operating under the influence after a pickup truck he was driving overturned in a gravel pit in Windsor in July of that year, killing his passenger, Roland True.
Authorities said the two had been drinking beer before accident. Schlosser was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with all but three years suspended, and three years of probation.
His driving license was still under suspension from the 1996 convictions, Fowle said.
