We have property tax reform. It’s the law.
When Gov. Baldacci signed in the new legislation on the Jan. 21, he heralded in a historic change. After six years, the legislation finally was able to work together because of the governor’s tax package. We now have significant property tax relief.
The legislation also gives municipalities direction on how to continue to reduce property taxes. When municipalities start to share services more and more with other municipalities, then spending will be kept under control. The state will give towns grants to encourage cost-sharing plans. By working with other towns, the proverbial duplication of efforts will come to an end. By buying needed services or equipment together with other towns, municipalities will get better deals.
In short, the legislation encourages towns to work together to bring down property tax bills more. Municipalities will get $225 million immediately as property tax relief once the bill goes into action this summer. It is real property tax relief.
I think my municipality will be able to keep spending under control and will look to work with neighboring towns so that they can secure a grant from the state.
I’m grateful to the governor and his team.
