SOUTH PARIS – Charles R. Stevens, 73, a resident of the Maine Veterans’ Home since December of 2004, and formerly of 174 Plains Road, Harrison, died Saturday with his wife of 53 years at his side.

Chuck was born in Portland, but spent most of his life in Gray. He was the son of Theodore and M. Jeannette Gamache Stevens.

He worked for the Portland Water District, for the Town of Gray, and had driven a dump truck.

He married Dorothy Edith Reynolds of Gray on March 23, 1951. He served with the 172nd, 43rd Division, U.S. Army during the Korean War.

His hobbies included boats, working with wood and his lifelong passion for anything connected with trains due to his grandpa, Emile.

He is survived by his wife; six children, Rosemarie and her husband, Norman Leonard, of Poland, Kerry Stevens and Brian of Waterford, Charles of California, Theodore and his wife, April, of Lewiston, James of Portland, and Mark and his wife, Wendy, of Portland; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, with a special tribute to his great-grandson, Christian Roscoe Frank, age 6, of Lewiston. He always treated Pappy Chuck with kindness, and helped him during his illness.

Special thanks to the Maine Veterans Home, B Unit, for all those caring hands needed to manage Chuck’s illness. We were touched by Chuck during his long illness; his family knows that he is in heaven with his grandpa riding the rails.

He was predeceased by his parents; his grandparents; and an infant sister, Jacqueline Theresa Stevens.
