Yellow ribbons are one way people show their support and gratitude for the service of the men and women in the U.S. military. Care packages are another.
Employers who hold jobs open for reserve soldiers without grudge and help out families left behind are doing the right thing.
There are many people putting their pocketbooks where their sentiments lie. One family, in particular, deserves public accolades.
Joe and Sheri Boulos have pledged $1 million to created a scholarship for Maine veterans who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan in post-Sept. 11 conflicts.
The Boulos Family Scholarship helps to accomplish three important goals. It honors the sacrifice that Maine soldiers are making in harsh and dangerous places around the world. It helps worthy students afford a college education. And the scholarship helps send Maine students to Maine schools.
The scholarship amount is based on the average cost of tuition at a Maine community college. Online applications will be available beginning Feb. 1 at www.boulosscholarship.me.edu.
