FARMINGTON – Food Check-Out Day is Sunday, Feb. 6, the day when the average American will have earned enough income to pay for his/her family’s food supply for the entire year.
Tax Freedom Day, when the same individual has earned enough to pay the taxes for the year, will occur in late April.
Franklin County Farm Bureau will have an educational display from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at Save-A-Lot in recognition of Food Check-Out Day. Organizers chose this day due to the Super Bowl on Feb. 6.
The public is invited Thursday to learn about the diversity and scope of agriculture in Franklin County.
In 1997, the most recent year for which figures are available, farmers in Franklin County paid $364,000 for property taxes and $499,000 in wages.
Donations will be accepted to help purchase food for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Maine. Anyone making a donation will receive a coupon from a local pizza restaurant. Door prizes will also be awarded.
Franklin County Farm Bureau, along with the assistance of local radio station, WKTJ, is also featuring an Agricultural Trivia Contest to help educate consumers about the importance of agriculture to this area. The contest will run three times daily during the weeks of Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 on WKTJ.
