A flurry of snowmobile accidents happened around state over the weekend – so many that the game wardens who investigate the crashes were practicing triage.
At least one was fatal.
Warden Sgt. Norman Lewis of Bryant Pond said wardens were investigating an incident where a snowmobiler broke through some ice and drowned in Hartland in Somerset County.
Lewis said he didn’t have any details of the incident, which was reported Sunday afternoon.
Nor did he have details about snowmobile crashes Saturday in Wilton and Rangeley, or others that he said happened across Maine during the weekend.
“We’ve been so busy that we’re getting to accidents with injuries like broken arms when we can,” Lewis said. At times, this has been after snowmobiles have been removed from the scene and people have received treatment.
He said pent-up demand coupled with good weekend weather apparently encouraged many sledders to take to the trails.
