Editor’s note: Every day there are rays of light that shine into the lives of people through their neighbors, their co-workers, their families and even through complete strangers. This column is devoted to exposing these sunbeams to the light and offering readers an opportunity to share good news. We plan to occasionally offer up our own sunbeams, too.
Holiday lights

I just want to thank the many families in the Lewiston-Auburn area who spent the time and money in decorating their homes and streets with festive holiday lights. My family spent several hours after Christmas Eve church service driving around and enjoying the many light displays, especially the Merrill Haven area off Court Street, across from the Auburn Middle School, where homeowners lit hundreds of bags lining the streets and driveways throughout their neighborhood. There were also horse-drawn carolers going up and down their streets.

The Nottingham Road area was also decorated with the illuminated bags.

Our family can’t remember having such an enjoyable Christmas Eve, which was greatly enhanced by the beauty these thoughtful families put on display. I hope we will be able to enjoy their displays again next year.

Thanks for helping

I am a Togolese immigrant refugee who came to Lewiston a few years ago with my wife and two children. Although it was not easy adjusting to a new culture, we have been able to settle in and become a part of the community.

I write this letter to thank all of those people and organizations who have helped to make things easier for us.

In particular, I thank the Lewiston hospital that provided housing and employment when we arrived. There are other organizations that helped with language, advice and assistance, and many people who have been kind, understanding and helpful.
