Dear Sun Spots: I recently read about old snow rollers, which were used on the roads in the winter, in your column. I can remember these as I lived in the country in Livermore Falls and attended a one-room schoolhouse. I cannot give the exact title but we called them snow rollers. These were very large rollers and were drawn by several pairs of horses to roll the snow down in the roads.

This was before snow was plowed out of the roads and very few trucks were around. In fact, very few cars were used in the winter, only those the doctors drove and other businesses’. Some of these cars had skis on the bottom of them called runners. My dad always put his Model T in the winter out in the barn on blocks until spring and the snow had all melted away. This was during the 1920s but I shall long remember them, as my sisters and brothers walked over a mile to school with me. – Margaret D., Auburn.

Dear Sun Spots: I love your column and try to read it every day. I have never needed your help until now.

I am a first-time mother of a little boy who was 1 year old in January. I have recently begun attending college as an early childhood education major, in honor of my son, to give him and other children the best possible start in life.

I am seeking any toddler or boy items free of charge or extremely inexpensive. Also my fiancé and I will be married in October. I need to find some free or inexpensive items to use during the wedding as we are paying for the entire wedding ourselves. We need all the help we can get. We’re looking for any autumn decorations such as silk leaves, flowers or pumpkins, white Christmas lights (no colored ones), garlands of silk ivy, any football/tailgate party items. Also any scrapbooking supplies people no longer want or need. Items such as scissors, die cuts, tools or stickers. Maybe there are some out there doing their spring cleaning and would like to donate some of those things to us.

We will gladly return the postage amount printed on the box/or envelope. Thank you, Sun Spots, and all the readers who keep us in your thoughts. We can be reached at 59 Northern Avenue Heights, Apt. 5, Auburn, ME 04210. Or please call at (207) 212-6148. – Terri Brady, Auburn.
